10 QUESTIONS FOR A CHILD STREET VENDOR
Nowadays, in the Philippines, vendors flock the streets in order to sell goods and services to strangers. Most often these vendors are outside government establishments, schools, and church.
Meet DINDO, a child street vendor at Quiapo church.
QUESTION 1: Mag-isa ka lang ba nagbebenta dito? (Are you the lone member in your family selling key chains here?)
DINDO: Opo. Pumunta po ako dito mag-isa. May sakit po kasi si Tatay. Ako muna po gagawa dito. (Yes. I went here alone. I will manage the selling of key chains since my father is sick.)
QUESTION 2: Nag-aaral ka ba? (Do you go to school?)
DINDO: Nakapagenroll naman po ako pero hindi muna po ako papasok ngayon kasi kailangan po asikasuhin ito. (I was able to enroll but I won’t go to school today since I have to manage the key chain selling.)
QUESTION 3: Wala ka bang mga kapatid? (Don’t you have any siblings?)
DINDO: Wala po. (None.)
QUESTION 4: Anong grade ka na? (What grade level are you in?)
DINDO: Grade 4. (Grade 4.)
QUESTION 5: Ano ang pangarap mo? Ano ang gusto mo maging kapag nakapagtapos ka na ng pag-aaral? (What are your dreams? Who do you want to be like when you are able to finish school?)
DINDO: Gusto ko po maging pari. (I want to become a priest.)
QUESTION 6: Bakit pari? (Why did you decide you become a priest?)
DINDO: Kasi po, mabubuti silang tao. Gusto ko rin po makaimpluwensiya sa ibang tao na gawin ang tama. (Because they are good people. I want to influence others to do good things.)
QUESTION 7: Ngayon ka lang ba magbebenta ng key chain? (Is this your first time to sell key chains?)
DINDO: Hindi po. Ilang beses na din po. Tinutulungan ko po ang itay. (No, I’ve done this for several times now. I help my father.)
QUESTION 8: Magkaano na ang kinita mo ngayon? (How much have you earned today?)
DINDO: Kulang-kulang po sa isang daan. (Less than 100 pesos.)
QUESTION 9: Hindi ka ba nahihirapan kasi bata ka palang pero naglalako ka na sa daan? (Are you not having a difficult time since you’re still young yet you have to do sell goods on the street?)
DINDO: Hindi naman po. Masaya po ako kasi natutulungan ko po ang pamilya ko. (No. I am happy since I am able to help my family.)
QUESTION 10: Ano ang mga talent mo? (What are your talents?)
DINDO: Sayaw po at pagkanta. (Dancing and singing.)
